Are You a Candidate for Deception?

Deception is one of the greatest dangers facing Believers today. The Bible warns that in the last days, deception will be so strong that even the elect could be led astray if it were possible (Mat 24:24). The enemy does not always come with obvious lies; he often twists the truth just enough to lead people down a path of error. Many who fall into deception never intended to do so—they simply neglected the safeguards God provided.
Are you vulnerable to deception? The answer depends on your spiritual foundation. Those who stay close to God, obey His Word, and walk in the fear of the Lord will be kept from the snares of the enemy. But those who neglect prayer, compromise on obedience, or seek "experiences" over truth are at great risk. Below are ten essential ways to guard yourself against deception and remain firmly rooted in the truth.
1. Pray and Remain in Continual Fellowship with God
A life of prayer keeps us sensitive to the Holy Spirit, attuned to His voice, and receptive to His guidance. Deception thrives in spiritual stagnation, but continual fellowship with God anchors us in truth. Prayer is not just a ritual—it is a lifeline that aligns our hearts with God's will and guards us from the enemy’s lies.
"Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess 5:17).
"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak" (Mat 26:41).
"And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint" (Luk 18:1).
"Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving" (Col 4:2).
2. Practice Radical and Sacrificial Obedience to the Scriptures
True obedience to God’s Word requires sacrifice. Many claim to follow Christ but pick and choose which commands to obey. This partial obedience opens the door to deception. Radical submission to Scripture ensures that our faith is genuine and not built on fleeting emotions or counterfeit spiritual experiences.
"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." (Jas 1:22)
"If ye love me, keep my commandments." (Jn 14:15)
"And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luk 6:46)
3. Cultivate Humility and the Fear of the Lord
Pride blinds us to truth, but humility and the fear of the Lord keep us from deception. Many are deceived because they refuse to acknowledge their need for God’s wisdom. A heart that trembles at God's Word will be kept from error.
"...but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word" (Is 66:2).
"By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life" (Prov 22:4).
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding" (Prov 9:10).
"Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time" (1 Pet 5:6).
4. Base Everything on Scripture
A Believer who neglects Scripture has no right to expect guidance from God. Many claim divine revelation but fail to live according to the revealed truth of the Bible. If we are not grounded in God's Word, we open ourselves up to deception.
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Ps 119:105).
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (Jn 17:17).
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim 2:15).
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Tim 3:16).
5. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit at All Times
The Holy Spirit is our safeguard against deception. A Spirit-filled life is one that is continuously renewed in truth, guided by divine discernment, and protected from falsehood.
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit" (Eph 5:18).
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God" (Rom 8:14).
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things" (Jn 14:26).
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come" (Jn 16:13).
6. Focus on Jesus
The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ (Jn 16:13-14). Any teaching, prophecy, or spiritual experience that does not exalt Jesus is not from the Holy Spirit. Keeping Christ at the center guards us from deception.
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (Heb 12:2).
"He must increase, but I must decrease" (Jn 3:30).
"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2).
7. Beware of Fantasy
Many are drawn into deception through imagination and fantasy, often fueled by entertainment and media. A Christian who is not abstaining from worldly entertainment can easily become detached from reality, unable to distinguish between truth and fiction. While imagination has its place, it must be disciplined and submitted to God.
8. Test Every Spirit
Not every spiritual manifestation or teaching is of divine origin. If a message does not align with Scripture and glorify Christ, it should be rejected.
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God" (1 Jn 4:1).
9. Love the Truth
A heart that genuinely seeks and delights in God’s truth will be preserved from error. We must hunger for the Holy Word, desire righteousness, and embrace correction when necessary.
"And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved" (2 Thess 2:10).
10. Don’t Be Afraid to Suffer
We must prepare our hearts for persecution and even martyrdom for Christ. Letting go of our earthly lives frees us from fear and strengthens our resolve to stand firm in truth.
"Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution" (2 Tim 3:12).
"If we suffer, we shall also reign with him" (2 Tim 2:12).
"Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer" (Rev 2:10).
Conclusion
Deception is subtle, but those who remain in prayer, obedience, humility, and the Word will not be easily swayed. Let us stand firm, test everything by Scripture, and cling to Christ, for only in Him is true safety from the lies of the enemy.
One more point: Satan knows how to twist our English Bibles to make his deceptions appear godly. Specially on the issue of the rules of paying men to lead in church. More than 4 are twisted by the translations and then used to trash ten scripture that clearly show the sin and damage of paying leaders. Yes, hired men with Bible degrees do this to protect their pay checks. When their appears to be a contradiction in the Bible, use simple tools to examine the translation. You don't have to know Greek to use these tools.
The Spirit will help you EXPOSE false translation. False translation ALWAYS creates a CONTRADICTION to the scripture.
